Digital Eclipse has announced a handheld. It only plays Tetris, but it’s still a handheld.
The Tetris company itself typically licenses their game out to different developers to create their own versions with minor changes, usually to design, music, and gameplay. Tetris Forever contains multiple different versions of the game made by different developers over the past 40 years, including the new Tetris Time Warp.
Basically, it’s standard Tetris but with small tetrominoes that shift the visuals and gameplay to mimic different eras throughout the history of Tetris. All of that leads up to now, with a Tetris handheld as part of the Tetris Forever Collectors Edition.
Tetris Forever: Collector’s Edition
The kit includes a poster, tetromino magnets, a modular tetromino box, the Tetris Time Warp soundtrack, five woven patches, and of course, the Tetris handheld.
The build of the handheld points more in the direction of this being a set piece rather than a constantly used handheld. However, its design does harken strong nostalgia for the original Game Boy DMG design with small changes to button placement and overall size.
Devices like these, special limited edition ones dedicated to Tetris, are all in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the iconic game. 7-11 just last year had a limited edition sale of a Slurpee handheld that played the original version of Tetris right on its side. But we’ve never seen something so dedicated to the franchise to the point of making a handheld inspired by its first handheld release.

Tetris is a game that surely every retro game enthusiast has played at least once. One of the most popular GBA homebrew, Apotris, is a spinning Tetris and its gameplay. After 40 years of consistent relevancy, Tetris is one of a few games that have etched its name in gaming history. Now, it can be memorialized through this new Tetris Forever handheld.
